Giustina Matassa Stockman… photo showing shops at the west end of George Street.  “Outside and inside the Winchester Cafe before the explosion blew it up in the 1960’s. The family were left with only the clothes they were wearing, they lost everything, home and business. Bought by my grandparents in approx 1936, and in the family over 60years.”

Bernard Goffredro… What a good idea electric buses I remember them

Carrie Downing-Waite Sawatzky… Busy town in those days

Peter Ellingworth… The then young woman somewhat bemused it seems, looking up at the photographer in the bottom picture looks the split image of my dear late mother.

Alan Esdaile… I was thinking the guy pointing in the first photo, looked like the pier manager Bob Knights?

Peter Ellingworth… The electric trolleybus in the lower photo – taken I would think in the early fifties and before 1956- 57, as that was when the roofs on the buses were painted cream/white, 782 was number 7 in the Hastings fleet.  One of twenty AEC double deckers with Weyman bodywork,  it entered service with Hastings Tramways in June 1940, lasting until closure under Maidstone and District in 1959.  The later batch delivered in 1946-47 were on closure of the much liked Hastings system, sold to other operators such as Maidstone, Walsall and Bradford lasting until 1970.

Peter Houghton… What great photos of the Sea Front The good old day’s

Stuart Moir… photo 2. That’s a really clear image, all brilliantly in focus.

The Pied Piper – Manor Road Hastings – 1974

Jim Breeds… Nope! It must have been bad for the children of the area!

Richard Turner… My dads band playing Thursday

Pete Millington…  Yep! SPYKE played there regularly in the mid 1970s

Alan Esdaile… Did someone say Crispian St Peters played at this pub?

Pete Fairless… Don’t know, but they used to play out at the end of the night with Bob & Marcia version.

Rod Bastable… Yes he did one weekend he played there. My brother and I were his Roadies at the time. I can’t remember what year it was.

Virginia Davis… Yes. My grandparents lived a few doors away. Spent many times in there with family

Dawn Leaney… Oh yes.. had good times there , dancing to the disco.. l think it was on a Friday night!

Tony Davis… Yes. I ran into the guy who managed him and he played there opening night

Jacquie Hinves… Yes , I do!

Terry Hardwick… I used to do the disco with Tony Murray his Dad Ted and his Mum Carol ran it .

Samantha Blake… I remember the pub x

Jo Turner… Yes, Lizzy and I often went there

Roy Penfold… Became The Manor in later years I believe…

Sandy Max… I only knew it as the Manor

Pete Brazier… I know for certain that his Record was lol

Ralph Town… Regularly pissed in there from 1975 to around 1979.

Ken Copsey… My grandads local when we lived in St Mary’s Terrace.

Tony Court-holmes… yet another old pub there used to be so many up that way but not any more

Merv Kennard… yes remember it well. played there a few times. landlord always wanted to flip a coin for double or quits before paying.

Colin Jefferys… Loved this pub was a regular in 1979. Carol snd Ted super couple. Ted worked for the Daily Mirror by day as a printer Carol paid me 50.00 to whitewash the cellar one weekday. Had some good times with them and yes Tony was involved in the disco.   Great days

Pete Brazier… Our Band “IRON DUKE” used to practice there and did a couple of Gigs there too! (The first one was my first ever proper gig!) I was so nervous my leg started to shake so I put extra weight onto that leg which stoped the shake but yes you probably guessed it! The other leg started to shake! I was leaning from side to side trying to get my legs to stop shaking! And all I could think is “Is this how shaking stevens got his name?” Either people didn’t noticed or thought it was some sort of dance because I never got referd to as “Shaking Peter”

Stephan Stolberger… Colin Jefferys,  I was in 1979 with my School Class in Hastings. We were in evenings in  the Pied Piper. It was very good. Who can tell me in which Street it was? I will make a holliday this year in Kent and I will visit this Pub where it was. Thank you. Sorry but it is my School English. I cant write English so good. It is 47 years ago.

Iain Cobby… Years ago, Hastings B C gave out free tickets when plays were not so well attended to boost the audience attendance . I remember going along to the show having been a great fan of “Please Sir!”. It wasn’t the greatest performance, I recall, but nice to see the chaps live.

Allan Mitchell… Wow! Amazing!I Remember These Geezers?

Rye and the Quarter Boys – anyone remember?

photo: https://www.discogs.com/artist/1855371-Rye-And-The-Quarter-Boys

Clive Richardson asks… does anyone remember Rye and the Quarter Boys? A great rock jazz group with brass section from the 1970’s?

Steve Boyce… I was the guitarist from 1981-1982. I appeared on the single “Fantasy / Private number”. I still have my copy (no, it’s not for sale). We weren’t so much jazz as soul, very much in the Stax mould.

Graham Bates… … and I was the drummer! If anyone has any live recordings, please let me know.

Kevin Williams… …..and that’s me singing. The production is very much of it’s time but I still love it’s ‘live’ sound.

Dave Nattress… Rye and the Quarterboys!! Just back-tracking a bit and found your single – Private Number. Now I thought the original was great – I still do, but yours is just wonderful – better. Love it. Won’t be the last time I play it.

Kevin Sheppard… In reply to Kevin Williams. Is that Kev who worked at the London hospital? I went to a few of your gigs at the college hall and the place down the canning town flyover long gone now

Karen Mc Kernan… I just found a copy of this belonging to my dad !

Mike Tomlin… ………… and I played keyboards. In the band from start to finish!

Vivien Mead… I remember watching you in the green rooms Bristol. Great band

Gareth Ward… Very disparaging towards the Q-Tips after a gig at QMC I recall

Gregory Brown… I played Saxophone in this band. (in reply to Kevin Sheppard) Yes Kevin worked at the London Hospital.

Ronnie… I used to be in a band which supported Rye and the Quarter Boys when they played at the Green Rooms in Bristol – more than once I think. I can remember them very cleary.

Ian Brazil… I saw R&QB several times between 1979 -80. Mainly at The Two Brewers pub in Clapham Common. Also a pub in Fulham (The King’s Head, I think) and a pub in Catford (The Tiger’s Head, or something like that). They were great. They had a few mods (I was one) who followed them because of the 60’s soul music. Many a find drunken night.

Stunshot – who remembers seeing them in Hastings in 1978?

stunshot

supplied by Gary Miller-Cheevers

ticket supplied by Mick O’Dowd

Gary Miller-Cheevers… I do remember that before the Pavilion gig we played in the Caves (same promoter) and were tickled to drive into town and be confronted with a poster proclaiming us as, “The Loud and Proud Stunshot”….I think maybe we played one other gig at the Pavilion too, but not 100% sure on that. Stunshot were a self-styled post-punk rock band who emanated from Perverse Velvet who had been  in the second battalion of the Roxy (Covent Gdn) punk wave. The name came from some association with snooker! The line-up was Grant Calton (vocals), Gary Miller-Cheevers (guitar), Mark Turner (bass) and Justin Webster (drums). The band hailed from various points of West London and Surrey and kept on keeping on until June 1981 when they played a final gig with the Psychedelic Furs – which I think was their first gig – at the Windsor Castle in Maida Vale. Gary and Grant are still occasionally getting down and doing it in an even more post punk kinda way!

Mick O’Dowd… Yes it was I that did both of these promotions. I remember them being an excellent band hence the repeat gig.

Mick O’Dowd… Gary can you remember the date of the Caves gig?

Victor Prince… Mick, I was the drummer at both of the Hastings gigs, Vic Prince on the left in the photo. I’ve still got a flyer (the loud and proud one)

Stag Inn All Saints Street Hastings 1964

Mick O’Dowd… When I managed Deep Purple (Hastings) we practised in All Saints Hall across the road. Half way through we would break for some refreshments across the road in the Stag. Trouble was that we all liked their cheese & onion sarnies which were delish. Problem was that when we resumed there was a lot of arguments about “I’m not singing in the same mic as him because his breath smells of onions!” That’s rock’n’roll for ya!

Chris Wood… I Stag..ered down those steps on several occasions

Amanda Hilton… Chris, now there’s a surprise

Paul Coleman… Is that the pub with the mummified cat?

Jacqueline Patton… Paul, yes.

‘Human League’ didn’t play nor did Nico.

Pete Fairless….No, they did not. Support was from the Gang Of Four.

Mick Mepham….Gang of Four were excellent as were Siouxsie and the Banshees, can’t remember Spizz Oil. If I remember rightly, the singer wore a bin liner and by the end of their set he was plastered with gob …. yeeeuch.

Pete Fairless….I thought GOF were a bit boring, Spizz were fun, and Siouxie & The Banshees were fantastic

John Storer… The Human League did not play their first live gig until June 1978 (Sheffield Hallam University has a plaque commemorating the date and venue, which is now a computer room). They did tour with Souixsie that year, but not until December The Mark II line-up are still gigging for all they are worth, and never fail to surprise the crowd with how good they still are. First saw them in December 81 when “Don’t You Want Me” was No.1. Last saw them in 2012 and they were better … and doing stuff from both “Reproduction” and “Travelogue”

Alan Esdaile… Remember seeing The Human League in 2003 with John Foxx support and they were very good.
